Desire to be nothing upon dying. The track is a play on "lay my soul to rest".
2) Shallow Grave
Perhaps war, although last release didn't really bring it up. It's either that or the obvious story of a murder victim.
3) The Needle in You
Could be a few things, either drug related or medical.
4) In the Sleeping Death
Being released from all cares after the living departs.
5) Killer by Night
Sal seems to like wolf-based concepts so maybe another one here?
6) Growing Old
Changing perspectives and wisdom acquired through the aging process.
7) Dead of Winter
Hard to tell. Could be about loneliness through the cold seasons. Could be more abstract.
8) Devil Came With a Smile
Probably an ex-wife/gf story.
9) Day of the Storm
Another fairly open concept that's hard to nail down. Maybe the apex of a long running problem that came to a head, and the subsequent conflict when the problem is finally confronted.
10) DMSLT
Dijon, mayonnaise, salami, lettuce and tomato. Delicious sandwich, obviously!
11) Cold Dark Mourning
Another day of waking up alone, missing loved ones and mourning past relationships.

Permalink Reply by Inanimate Assault on January 23, 2013 at 11:54am First off I'm excited about the new album. I have to admit being a Type O Negative fan grandfathered into APHND fandom I was caught off guard by how excellent the first album was. I loved Pete and TON and I mean no disrespect in any way, but I saw an interview back in 03 where Pete pretty much gave Sal sole credit for starting Type O Negative. In that case Sal was sort of the Knight of Wands, an inspirational energy that was the catalyst or driving force that initiated TON. I see that same energy manifested in APHND. What is different here has to do with time. Maturity and experience are giving APHND a kind of precision and finish that was still developing in TON. Its like the idea was there and it just keeps getting better refined over time. I may be wrong, but my take on APHND is simply that is brings a specific sound that has taken almost 2 decades to fully develop to life. Because of that I don't see a need for gimmicks. This band is a sound to be reckoned with, it has an old soul quality because it is part of something that has been in the making for a long time. I feel like Sal got to really express his ideas in album #1 and it was superb. It worked. APHND has nowhere to go except up, and getting people familiar with it is its only hurdle to immortality; and a lot of progress has been made there. I think as long as Sal and the band have fresh ideas that they want to try there won't be much need to do other peoples music except for pure fun or maybe the occasional tribute.
I can only speak for myself, but I know I won't be disappointed in "Lay My Soul To Waste".
I just spent a week in the Hospital recovering from a 3rd heart attack and an angioplasty operation... All I really want at the moment is to stay alive long enough to hear this new album. You guys are amazing!
Keep it Negative \m/

Permalink Reply by redrum on April 1, 2013 at 2:20am The samples are making me want more. I first started listening to Shallow Grave, I was really getting into it, then "fuck, it ended".
Permalink Reply by Tempest on April 17, 2013 at 11:49am I just saw the tweets go up with the Blabbermouth.net announcement about the new album. I am listening to Shallow Grave now. I like it a lot. I think that the lyrics are relatable about putting someone to the back of your mind.
