REVIEWS:

"In alternative metal circles, Sal Abruscato is best known for his contributions to Type O Negative and Life of Agony. The Brooklyn native was a co-founder of Type O Negative (along with the late Peter Steele) and was that band's original drummer; after leaving Type O Negative in 1993, he became Life of Agony's drummer (a position he still held in 2011). A Pale Horse Named Death is a side project for Abruscato, who sings lead on APHND's first album, And Hell Will Follow Me, in addition to writing all of the lyrics; Matt Brown (guitarist for the doom metal/stoner rock band Seventh Void) helped with the producing and engineering), while Bobby Hambel of Biohazard fame plays lead guitar on three of the songs. But Abruscato is the one in the driver's seat, and this 2011 release finds him continuing to walk on the dark side. Musically, And Hell Will Follow Me doesn't sound very much like Life of Agony, but Type O Negative is a definite influence, along with Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Load-era Metallica and Black Sabbath. This is sludgy but consistently melodic alt-metal with elements of doom metal, stoner rock, grunge, and gothic metal; And Hell Will Follow Me is heavy without being heavy-handed. It is also an album that, lyrically, never fails to be gloomy and morose; Abruscato is as pessimistic and darkly introspective on "To Die in Your Arms," "Devil in My Closet," and "Die Alone" as he is on "Heroin Train" (which, as its title indicates, is about heroin addiction). So in other words, And Hell Will Follow Me is not an album that should be playing in the background if one is answering the phone for a suicide prevention hotline. But not all music is obligated to provide happy, cheerful escapism; dark lyrics certainly have their place as well, and dark lyrics are the rule on And Hell Will Follow Me, which falls short of remarkable but is nonetheless a solid and inspired, if derivative, debut fromA Pale Horse Named Death."

"Imagine if Stone Temple Pilots and Paradise Lost had a baby." - Hails & Horns

‘And Hell Will Follow Me’, which sounds like Alice In Chains mysteriously sneaking up behind Type O Negative with a butcher’s knife while being filmed for a future episode of ‘Law & Order - This Is Not A Scene

“Sal Abruscato, former drummer of Type O Negative and current drummer of Life of Agony (Brooklyn!), sings, plays guitar, and writes the songs for this band, while Type O’s Johnny Kelly handles drumming duties live, and fuck, this debut album is awesome. Sounds to me like Alice in Chains at their darkest with a touch of Type O. Not out until June 14, but run out and get it then.” - Brandon Geist, Editor & Chief of Revolver Magazine

"And Hell Will Follow Me", it's a psychedelic trip of grunge, metal and rock. It's like if Peter Steele, Jim Morrison and Layne Staley contacted Sal and Matt from beyond the grave to be part of this album. - Metal Assault

I'm really impressed with what is going on here . This could be a large band in the heavy rock/ metal scene if SPV gives it a proper video and promotion. Were lacking heavy, creative dark rock music that can actually move you in 2011 and this is it. - Absolute Zero Media

"A Pale Horse Named Death the new project lead by Sal Abruscato (Typo-O-Negative, Life Of Agony) reminds me of an evil Alice In Chains. It’s definitely fresh and there is nothing like this out there that I have heard." - RockNightmare.com

"And Hell Will Follow Me is the intricately stitched unification of old school rock and roll with soulless Goth!" - HitThePitBlog.com

"Tracks like “To Die In Your Arms”, “Meet The Wolf” and “Die Alone” are carrying that ALICE IN CHAINS-esque paralytic scent that ‘screams’ Jerry Cantrell/ Layne Staley, without loosing the early TYPE O id thanks to the rest songs of the album." -MetalKaoz.com

"To compare A Pale Horse Named Death to TON is very narrow and short-sighted. APHND is of the slow-sludgy kind of doom that gave birth to bands like Down, but at the same time there is a heavy helping of Alice In Chains style alternative metal that gives the songs a mass appeal." - MTUK Metal Zine

Newsflash!! Extra, extra!!  A band is doing something new that is passionate, heartfelt, experienced, and metal.  The reason for the news flash is that those qualities are so rare I feel I have to go out on the street corners and shout it to the world. -WeLoveMetal

Sal Abruscato, former drummer of Type O Negative and current drummer for Life of Agony, decided to leave his comfort zone behind the drums and to pick up the guitar. With his guitar work in A Pale Horse Named Death’s new record, titled “And Hell Will Follow Me”, he has proven that he is more than just an amazing drummer. On songs like “As Black As My Heart” and “Die Alone”, you can clearly hear his Type O Negative roots. I am glad to hear this in his music, it makes missing Peter Steele a little easier. -Horns Up Rocks

New band featuring ex-Type O Negative / Life of Agony drummer Sal Abruscato, another Brooklyn boy, collaborating with producer, engineer and musician Matt Brown. The result is a band that has sonic elements of the aforementioned (more so Type O than Life of Agony) but has its own brand of dark melancholy too. -MetalSucks.net

I love the songs/album-& like I just read in one of the earlier posts it's part of my daily life. It unique&has a 'fresh' individuality-half of the 'reviewers' out there have their heads up their mainstream asses. I hardly ever go by a review-music/film/art-anything. We all have our own tastes so one magazine idiot at his desk listening to Justin Bieber on his iPod isn't going to sway me from checking an album out for myself!

I like the review from RockNightmare.com ...the "Evil Alice In Chains" sound comparison is dead on. Like AIC died and all came back as zombies. Supremely disturbing.

It's kinda hard to say, but I think 'Heroin Train' is my favourite one. Hope to see APHND on stage - there are plenty of summer festivals coming.

if i had to pick 1 song it would definitely have to be Serial Killer
Kalani Kokonuts Comment by Kalani Kokonuts on December 22, 2010 at 4:33am

I like ''Serial Killer''.

Three reasons I am not one:

-Not enough upper body strength

-No follow through

-I drive a Scion...
